Lab rutile is grown using the flame fusion method and used in optical devices. It is the only lab gem we set in jewelry that has a mohs hardness less than 8 (mohs 6.5, similar to tanzanite). Rutile has the greatest dispersion of all gem materials, 6 times the dispersion of diamonds giving it unique optical effects that no other gem can rival.
